In January, the Trump Administration issued an executive order titled “Unleashing American Energy,” which paused funding for several key climate action initiatives, including programs under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The IRA provides funding for clean energy incentives such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which allows homeowners and businesses to claim a tax credit worth 30% of the total cost of eligible clean energy systems.
What’s the Latest?
Recently, the House Ways and Means Committee passed a bill called the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill,” which proposes eliminating funding for the ITC by the end of 2025, nearly 10 years earlier than planned. The House of Representatives has already passed the bill, and it’s now headed to the Senate.
Republican members of the Senate are pushing for a vote by July 4th, aiming to fast-track the bill through both chambers of Congress.
If the bill passes the Senate, the ITC will officially expire after December 31, 2025. This means:
- If you install a solar or battery system before January 1, 2026, you’ll still qualify for the 30% tax credit.
- If you install your system on or after January 1, 2026, you’ll no longer be eligible.
There is bipartisan opposition to the bill, and the Senate is expected to propose changes before moving forward. If amended, the bill will return to the House for another vote.
Why This Matters
The ITC has been one of the most effective policies for expanding clean energy in the United States. It makes solar and battery systems more affordable, supports American jobs, and helps reduce carbon emissions. Rolling back this incentive could stall progress in the fight against climate change by making it more expensive for homeowners and businesses to transition to clean energy.
